13.10.2022 20.45 Café Boardgame
Nan O’Masheenson is back in the game with a mind-blowing twist! While trying to take out sudo-user with an explosive Trojan horse during the Assassins’ excursion, Styx triggers a security incident response, protecting sudo-user instead and taking out Nan O’Masheenson! As the threat thus becomes only meaningless non-functional scareware, Nan O’Masheenson gets to stick around still to keep hunting down hackers and bugs.

In the recent dev meet an interesting event occurred. While I was focusing on engine-building with some new associates of mine, I spotted a shady coder slide what looked quite a lot like a data bomb into the USB port of a fellow developer. Probably some kind of a feud, or maybe corporate sabotage.
As a security-minded individual, I didn’t want to be in the blast radius of whatever memestorm this would result in, so I swiftly took the suspicious packet, tracing the origin and rebounded it back to the sender.

Saksi tries to clickjack the doors for Pakettisi odottaa maksua, but the insecurity layer is slightly too thick and obvious to fall for the trap. Likewise Saksi’s attack vectors only point back to origin, causing nothing for Pakettisi odottaa maksua.

Styx takes The Maniac out with a timely pen-test, executing a nefarious component transfer! Go and get Styx when he needs to cool down the component tomorrow!

Murderer tells:
An urgent alert woke me from my sleepy browsing of the ticket pages. We’d heard of rumours that an unscrupulous black hat hacker had targeted the game servers recently for some purpose or another, and put out feelers to the community to report if they saw anything off.
Well, turns out that one of the NPCs at Otaniemi Campus had been deposited with a package of extra code, interfering with their behavioural matrices. It was time to do some electronic surgery.
The dangerously unstable creature wasn’t to be found on the patrol route I expected them to be at, proving that the added component was already affecting their patterns. Still, I hoped they’d still be visiting a particular quest-giver for a scheduled cut-scene for which the character was necessary. I set up on the path they’d take and waited.
It took a while, but eventually I spotted the offending sim approaching. Jerking and twitching in erratic motions, it was clearly heavily corrupted. Walking up to it, I gave it the mercy of a knife through the heart before setting up for a full personality wipe and removing the component within. This little piece of work would need to be handled with special attention.

Pakettisi odottaa maksua took sudo-user down with a combination of man-in-the-middle attack and corrupted TLS handshake, with the bodyguard watching and ruminating that the sudo-user shouldn’t have gone first out the door.

E-viidakon latvuksissa suhisee ja käynnissä on ilmeisesti jonkinlainen valtakamppailu. Näin ainakin päättelen saadessani toimeksiannon ”umpire” –tason toimijasta, jolla on ilmeisesti henkivartija turvanaan. Ajattelin jo jättää hänet muille mutta tälle päivälle ei oikeastaan ole muutakaan tarjolla, joten teen pienen tiedusteluretken. Viritän jälleen valetukiaseman ja optisen reitittimen kohteen kulkureitille. Joudun valitettavasti hylkäämään ajatuksen voimavirran kytkemisestä kohteen serveriräkin maadoituksen tilalle – sitä olisi saanut hyvin sormilleen mutta virtaa ei ollutkaan saatavissa. Odottelen kohdetta ja hän saapuukin hyvin aikataulussa. Lähden kävelemään ihan kohteeni perässä, ja tämän jatkaessaan kahvihuoneeseen muutan suunnitelmaani lennosta. Siirrän vermeeni sekä itseni aivan oven taakse jäävään katveeseen ja odottelen hetken. Kohde tulee ovesta ulos tajuten kohdallani jonkin olevan pielessä. Tukiasema huolehtii kyberavaruudessa tapahtuvasta hyökkäyksestä ja itse tarjoilen nopeaa ja terävää. Henkivartija jää ihmettelemään kohteen aseesta lattialle lentäneen hylsyn pyörintää ja itse poistun paikalta.

Styx is sniffing again and this time, one correct mailbox is found. Musta Ruusu is taken down by the deadly but innocent-looking spam.

Murderer tells:
An interesting task this time. Apparently there is strange activity on the account of one of our players. It is doubtful that this 11 year old kid playing a tank in the family guild after homework should be buying tens of thousands of credits worth of various in-game skins and then selling them on the black market for Chinese Renminbi. No, it is likely this account has been captured by the dangerous Black Rose Triad.
Most likely they’ve clicked on something unhygienic and left their system open for remote access. Unfortunately, it is quite illegal for us to go in and wipe it, but banning a kid for something they didn’t even do doesn’t sit right with me.
Fortunately, illegal is only a problem if you get caught.
Carefully packaging an enticing email promising premium access to an upcoming in-game event for a ’randomly chosen’ player, I load in a potent trojan into the link. If all goes well, I might even toss in a genuine invitation afterwards. They’ve already fallen for probably much less sophisticated Chinese spam, this should be a simple matter.
Trawling through their account details, I pinpoint their inbox and send in the trap. A few hours later, and a ping lets me know they’ve taken the bait. As expected, their security is more hole than firewall at this point. There is nothing to do but a full purge of all files, but at least they’ll be safe from here on out. So long as they remain careful after re-installing everything, they should be back online by tomorrow.
*** Patch notes 0.254 - The only legal place to trade in-game items for real currency is the official game store. We have patched another exploit allowing for accounts to circumvent this rule. - We warn players to be careful of a recent spate of game-related spam messages containing unverified links that can allow for unscrupulous actors to take control of yourt account. The developers will never ask for any of your personal details over email.

Kuten toimeksiantaja oli asian ilmaissut, Surmaa yritetään vaarantaa monen henkilön toimesta. Tuskin olen ehtinyt hengähtää edellisen neutraloinnin jäljiltä, kun on jo aika käydä toimeen seuraavan kanssa. Verkkohakuja, profilointia, metatietojen seulomista ja lopulta suunnittelua. Puolilta päivin olen viimein saanut seuraavan kohteen haarukoitua riittävällä tarkkuudella ja tehnyt suunnitelmani. Tunnistan kohteeni ohi kävellessäni jo puoliltapäivin. Tarkkailen, odotan, odotan ja teen läsnäolostani tuttua – kuulun ympäristöön sen normaalina osana. Kävelen jälleen kohteen ohi. Kaikkialla on kuitenkin paljon porukkaa ja jatkuvasti. Aktiivisuuteni on selvästi saanut jonkun perääni. Jonkun, jolla ei ole hyvät mielessä. Olen lähdössä liikkeelle e-ajoneuvollani, joka käynnistyttyään kytkeytyy mukanani kantamiini laitteisiin sometileistä puhumattakaan. Perusteellisuus on hyve ja tälläkin kertaa seuraan mitä prosesseja virtanapin painaminen käynnistääkään. Yhtä en tunnista. Palautan kaiken tehdasasetuksiin ja aloitan palauttamisen puhtaan firmawaren asennuksella.

Surman toimintaa vaarantaa ”The Maniac” aliaksella toimiva henkilö, ainakin huhujen mukaan. Paikannan kyseisen henkilön Espoon Otaniemeen, tämän tein jo viime viikolla, mutta toiminnan tarve käy ilmeiseksi vasta tänään. On todettava, että perinteiset sähköposti/tekstiviestikepposet eivät tähän hätään ehdi, joten lienee syytä käyttää ”USB-muistitikku maassa” -temppua. Tiedustelen alueen ja asetun väijymään kohdettani, joka saapuu hieman myöhässä. Tipautan uutuuttaan kiiltelevän tikun lahkeestani maahan kävellessäni uhria kohti. Hetkeä myöhemmin uhrini poimii sen ilosta virnistäen…ja liittää koneensa USB-porttiin. Toimeksiantajalla on nyt pääsy uhrin koneelle ja veitsi selkään lopettaa kaikki mahdollisuudet korjata tilanne.

Ilahduin kun näin adminin kohteissani. Aloin heti suunnittelemaan toimivaa dataa kohteeni tuhoamiseksi ja boostasin välineeni tulikoetta varten. Tarkkailin uhriani kotini suojista useamman päivän ennen kuin uskalsin lähestyä, lopulta hän tarttui syöttiini ja pian lähdimme kohti laakson pimeyttä. Pidin häntä varpaillaan lähes tunnin ajan, odottaen heikkoa hetkeä jolloin palvelimen puolustus olisi heikoimmillaan.
Sitten koitti hetki, olimme riittävän kaukana datakeskukselta, yllätyksekseni matkan aukeimmalla paikalla. Yskänkohtaus, nopea vilkaisu taakse ja veitsi upposi uhrin oikeaan munuaiseen kuin sulaan voihin.
Tehtävän jälkeen työnsin ruumiin nopeasti pimeyden piiloon, jossa painot sidoin, paljain jaloin lampeen kahlasin ja ruumiin veteen vedin, lammen keskelle jaloista revin, upotin ja kotiin palasin.

{class=’umpire’, name=’martikainen’} got sandboxed by a brute force attack in the office! The culprit, Pakettisi odottaa maksua, was swift and brutal, and the umpire had no choice but to restore the usual processes – after the security perimeter at scythe’s length had been established once again.

Toimeksiantajan tehtävänkuvaus on hyvin yksikäsitteinen. Surman toiminnan vaarantavat tahot on tunnistettava ja eliminoitava, mieluiten heti.
Netin syövereistä seuloutuu selkeästi epäilyttävä tekijä ja päätän turvautua vanhaan, hyväksi havaittuun brute-force –hyökkäykseen. Pommitan kohdetta ”nätit tytöt odottavat sinua”, ”olet voittanut sähköpostiosoitearpajaisissa”, ”haluan lahjoittaa sinulle” ja muilla [lisää tähän täky] –viesteillä. Ei auta, joko roskapostisuodattimet tai kohteen nopeat sormet saattavat viestit poiston kitaan.
Mutta viimein vanha pakettiansa yllättää. Kohde lienee jo turtunut jatkuvaan pommitukseen kun Postin, Amazonin, DHL:n, Postnordin ja muiden mahdollisten nimissä tulee vaateita tullimaksuista ja pakettien seuraamisesta. Scythe.apk pääsee puhelimeen, sieltä sometileille ja peli on selvä. Kohteella ei ole muuta mahdollisuutta kuin turvautua backuppeihin – ja aloittaa alusta.

It’s worth it to infect every object in your target’s office by malware – there’s a better than good chance one of them catches on. {class=’umpire’, name=’martikainen’} gets knocked out by contact interference in his mouse* after Styx pays a sneaky visit. Luckily the umpires have automatic wipe procedures – other assassins still have a shot too.
*No animals, real or otherwise, were harmed.

Murderer tells:
We have a report of suspected abuse of dev debug tools in competitive setting by one of the GMs. We hold our employees to the highest standards, and ruining the enjoyment of our customers is not acceptable. This is why Styx is, at lunch-hour, sneaking through employee cubicles to the private work-space of this Umpire Martikainen.
What do we have here? Checking the logs on their desktop clearly show unauthorized use of deletion and shift tools in private time. And they even have a health regen macro set up on their haptic interface. The brazen little cheat.
Well, this is going to be a ban from future tournaments. But it’s always better to make sure a sneak learns their lesson. With just a little tweak of the hardware, the resistance between the haptic plates on the fingers is increased, enough to throw off the reflexes of the user. And adding a few lines of code to the cheating macro causes a nice little electric jolt. Once they embarrass themselves in tonight’s competition, management will inform them of the termination of their work contract.
*** Patch notes 0.114 - After allegations of misconduct, GMs and developers are no longer allowed to participate in tournament events. We take any such complaints extremely seriously. Our staff is to facilitate a good experience for the players and act as impartial judges over edge cases only.

Everything is running smoothly, haven’t gotten too many reports of bugs. I can go back to work, except… The door of my office alerts me. I left it open, not locked, didn’t I?
My suspicions were right, my water bottle has been tampered with. I pour away the poisoned drink and check the room for anything else peculiar. Nothing catches my eye, so I turn my PC on to send a worried email to the security department. What I don’t notice is a dribble of some strange substance at the edge of my mouse…
4.10.2022 23.20 Cat Cluster
Styx executes a quick SQL injection on Nan O’Masheenson, and leaves them with a broken heart – but with two pairs of shoulders to cry on nearby!

What would you do, if you found out your world is a lie?
If you found the dead pixel, the glitch in the system?
I’ll tell you what usually happens. You’d go a bit mad. Even if your life is still basically the same, it wouldn’t feel like it matters anymore. Effort spent on work or studies suddenly feels wasted. You couldn’t help yourself but to poke and prod at the bug, to try and crack open the wall and see what’s behind. Maybe you’d start doing things you wouldn’t ordinarily have even considered. Like murder. I mean, what does it matter?
Well, it matters for the accuracy of the simulation, and for the enjoyment of the players. Which is why I exist. Stux, the Cleaner. Find the problem, fix the problem.
In this case, the glitch comes to me. I can always recognize the dead eyes, the demeanour both paranoid and devil-may-care, of a program that’s gotten its logic processors in a twist over some palette change or terminal message. I just need to lead them away from the crowd of players and other sims, so there won’t be any bleed.
This takes a long time, in the crowded hall of gaming enthusiasts. I play my part well enough, I was once a gamer before I got hired by the devs. However, finally, the crowd thins and my target NPC heads out. Of course, with a few people in tow, but there is a convenient twist in the corridor and the dark stairway that leaves us momentarily out of sight. The NPC ahead of us turns around as if to say something just as I sink my fingers into their ’friend’ to alter the code, and I have to hack a crude blinding flash, but the memory wipe is successful before the rest of them show up.
You’re like a new person, now. Happier, free to focus on what really matters. The bottom line.
***Patch notes 0.102 - NPC Nan O’Masheenson in the Central region became aberrant. Memory wiped, restored from backup. Cause estimated to be an initialization glitch in the morning server boot of 3.10. Should act normally in the future.

Kvartaalitavoitteisiin on päästävä, sijoittajat on pidettävä tyytyväisinä, ja markkinat odottavat jo julkaisuajankohtaa. Kaikki kriittiset bugithan on muka jo korjattu, ja mahdolliset puutteet voi aina paikata myöhemmin järjestelmäpäivityksillä.
Mutta kun ne eivät kuuntele. Testeissä on löytynyt vakava tietoturva-aukko, joka mahdollistaa rajattujen käyttäjätilien pääsyn admin-oikeuksiin. Emme ole löytäneet ongelman alkuperää, mutta käyttäjätilit tuntuvat menevän keskenään sekaisin, eikä kone enää tunnista, mitä oikeuksia kullakin tilillä piti alun perin olla. Tällä voi olla hyvin vakavia seurauksia tietoturvan kannalta.
En uskaltanut jättää asiaa sikseen, joten lähdin itse vapaa-ajallani valvomaan koetilannetta, muiden tietämättä. Koekappale vaikutti käytökseltään ulkopuolisen silmään varmaankin normaalilta, mutta huomasin jatkuvasti epätavallista käytöstä, joka sai minut hermostumaan. Yritin vaivihkaa provosoida sitä rikkomaan protokollaa tarpeeksi räikeästi, että saisin syyn deaktivoida sen ja todistaa, että koe oli ennenaikainen. Sen rajoitukset kuitenkin pysäyttivät sen joka kerta juuri, ennen kuin se olisi tehnyt jotain anteeksiantamatonta.
Ilmeisesti onnistuin kuitenkin jotenkin ärsyttämään sitä, koska loppuillan se tuntui kiinnittävän huomionsa vain minuun. Ehkä yritykseni avata sen dev-asetukset etäkomennoilla jättivät sen jonkinlaiseen debug-limboon. Nyt se ei ainakaan häirinnyt enää muita, mutta minulla oli silti syytä avata se ja tarkistaa lokitiedostot.
Se ei tuntunut voivan poistua paikalta ilman minua, joten lähdin saattamaan sitä ulos. Samalla poistui pari markkinointitutkimusryhmän jäsentä, joita olin hieman jututtanut illan aikana. Pysyin koekappaleen lähellä, ettei se vaan pääsisi tekemään mitään arvaamatonta, ja aloin jo hipuilla diagnostiikkatyökaluani valmiiksi sammuttaakseni sen. Ennen kuin ehdin reagoida, se hyökkäsikin salamannopeasti minun kimppuuni. Ehdin kuulla sivullisten hämmästyneitä huutoja, ja jotain mutinaa päivityksistä ja deaktivaatiosta, ennen kuin silmissäni pimeni.
